I’ve just seen and heard so much hatred. I’ve been called garbage, I’ve been called the death of fucking good music, trash, stupid, pointless and disposable. I don’t understand. I’m just trying to make people happy. And it’s such positive, fun music. Like, why are people so angry?

What’s not ok is bashing someone for their musical preferences, and especially bashing the artist that puts himself or herself in such a vulnerable place to share their music with people who might enjoy it.

Long story short, to catch you guys up on things, I have depression and anxiety that has only recently been diagnosed and have been spiraling for the last year and a half with no help. I finally got help but had to take a leave of absence from school for a while. I love my friends at school dearly and, as far as I’m concerned, LA isn’t home, Goucher is.

Fast forward to a month ago when I left school. I started talking to my mom about wanting to visit for the first week of May, take care of some businessy things and get to see my friends (and see Iron Man 3 with them, but I didn’t tell her that part). I told her that it’s super important because most of my friends, whom I’ve know for 4 years, are graduating, and if I don’t see them before graduation I don’t know if/when I’ll ever get to see them again. She said “We’ll see. This trip will be a carrot, to motivate you to be productive.” I asked her what specific things she wanted to see done to show “progress”, but she couldn’t give me a straight answer.

A couple weeks later I’m settling in at “home”, working my ass off for the job that I have at the moment and trying to look for other jobs, trying to coordinate with my teachers at school to set up stuff, trying to keep my room relatively clean, and taking very good care of the dog I’m dog-sitting. My psychologist says I’m making a lot of progress, learning to be ok with being by myself, handling my emotions better, communicating with my mom well. And she agrees that I need to see my friends. Being isolated from them until at least August would be catastrophic to my recovery. Talk to my mom about the trip. We even look at ticket prices for the flight and figure out when it would be, but she won’t let me buy the tickets yet. “We’ll see. You’re doing well, keep going.” What else do you want me to do, specifically? No answer.

Early this week, I can feel the dread sinking in. It’s so soon, and I haven’t received a definitive answer. My mom keeps talking about carrots. Finally I confront her, not angry, just sad.

“Hey mom?”

“Yes sweetie?”

“…is the carrot even there?” She’s confused, so I continue. “You say that you’re holding a carrot in front of me to motivate me. But you’re not. You’re telling me that you’re holding a carrot, and I just have to trust you that it’s there. So is the carrot really there? Do I have any chance of going on this trip? Or have you already decided ‘no’ and I’m just keeping my hopes up for nothing? Am I going to reach the finish line only be showed that there is, in fact, no carrot, and there never was?”

She starts explaining things which I understand and have sound arguments against, but all I can hear is: “It’s not ‘yes’, but it’s not a definitive ‘no’.” There’s still hope.

It’s Friday. 5 days until my potential trip. And no word from Mom. I can’t help but think that she’s waiting. “Oh, it’s too soon, honey. We don’t have time to set everything up. Next time.” Make time the bad guy, so that she doesn’t have to take the blame. Argue that there was a carrot all along, it just went bad, rotten and covered in bugs.

I’m so tired of promises and incentives made of smoke and mirrors. You know, Mom, maybe if I could trust you to deliver, I would work harder. But good luck getting me to chase your carrots now. I’m done. I’ll get my own damn carrots.
